The aim of the Department of Biology is to
encourage scientific thinking and to provide the students with the necessary up
to date theoretical knowledge and practice in the field of life sciences. The
Department offers B.Sc as well as M.Sc and Ph.D degrees.
The fields of interest of the
department are wide ranging and include the followings,local flora, fauna and ecology; population genetics;
biodiversity and conservation biology; environmental quality; biotechnology; toxicology; molecular
biology; proteomics and genomics.
The Biology department was founded 1990 in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and includes five
sub-sections: Botanic, Ecology, General Biology, Molecular Biology and Zoology.
There are totally 9 professors, 2 associate professor, 5 assistant professors,
1 instructor, 1 expert and 20 research assistants. Each
member of staff is actively involved in research and consultancy work. This
ensures that they remain academically active within their respective fields of
interest. The Department organizes seminars, symposiums and other activities.
Our students can participate in research programs or in such activities.
Each year 50 students are accepted to the
Department. Duration of education in the department is four years. Our
graduates are well equipped with the knowledge and the capability to do
research to catch up with the new developments in biological sciences and are
expected to meet the needs in the future.
The graduates have very good employment
opportunities in the research centers of both the public and the private
industry and also at the educational institutions. New opportunities for
biologists are being created in the ever expanding field of biotechnology.
Our students are also encouraged going abroad by
means of some educational programs such as Erasmus or Leonardo da Vinci. For
that purpose we want to sign new bilateral agreements or some other contacts.
In case of any difficulties or getting
information, you are encouraged to approach the tutors or the Head of
Department.
