The Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures was founded in 1997 at Akdeniz University (Antalya). In the Department, mostly, Greek and Latin Epigraphy is taught and the students of the department are given the requirements of epigraphy. Eventually, the mission of the department is to train scholars who can engage in the ancient documents for the fields of Archaeology, History and Classical Philology.
As it is well known that the epigraphical sources reaching back to 3000 years are the most valuable historical records. Among the Turkish Universities, Epigraphy is present only in the Department of Ancient Languages and Cultures at Akdeniz University. In 1998, "Research Center for Mediterranean Languages and Cultures" attached to the department was founded in order to fulfil scientific projects.
