Department of Biostatistics and Medical Informatics has been
established to provide education and consultation services based
on basic requirements of an ideal university; i.e. building the
information infrastructure, planning research activities,
evaluating the research results and presenting them. The
department is responsible for the introduction course of medical
informatics, which takes place in the freshman year cirruculum of
the medical school. In this course, the future physicians are
introduced the basic concepts of computing and the application of
informatics in the field of medicine and the use of Internet and
some statistical packages . In the fourth year course called
Biostatistics, the scientific foundations that explains how to do
a research and how to evaluate the research results are presented.
Besides, the department offers elective courses for the students
of other departments, which take place under the Institute of
Health, like Introduction to Computers and Microcomputer Operating
Systems, Biostatistics I, Statistical Research Techniques in
Health Sciences, and Computer Applications in Health. The
laboratory sessions of these courses are held in a computer
laboratory with 25 computers.
Besides, the department offers the Medical Informatics MSc.
program, which was initiated in 1993 and is the first program in
Turkey in the field of Medical Informatics. Additionally, the
Medical Informatics PhD. program has started in February 2006. The
graduates of these programs are experts in the subfields of the
structure of medical data, storage of and processing the medical
data, and the technologies in health.
When established in 1989, the departmental academic staff also
formed the computer center team, which built the software
infrastructure and designed and implemented the hospital
information system in use. Currently, the department provides
statistical and information systems consultations throughout the
university.
