1. Protected Area Planning
Definition and classification of protected areas. Historical progress of nature protection in Turkey and in the world, policies followed on this subject. International conventions about protected areas and related organizations. Legal arrangements concerning nature protection in Turkey. Existing protected areas (national parks, nature parks, specially protected areas, natural sites etc.) in the country. Site selection criteria and planning principles for protected areas. Preparation of master plan and management plans. Public and NGO participation in the management.
2. Coastal Planning and Management
Definition of coast and shore concepts. Types of coasts, coastal ecosystems, coastal dynamics. Coastal management concept and related issues. International and regional programs and agreements about protection of coastal areas. Legal arrangements concerning the planning of coastal areas and shorelands in Turkey. Regional Master Plans and Structural Plans. Measures taken to conserve coastal ecosystems.
3. Management of Wetland Ecosystems
Definition and classification of wetland concept. Functions and importance of wetlands from the point of view of biologic diversity. International programs and agreements about wetlands. Measures taken in the European Union regarding the protection of wetlands. Wetlands of Turkey and classification of these wetlands according to their qualities. Basic problems of wetlands. Restoration possibilities of dried wetlands. Management principles of wetland ecosystems.
4. Research Planning and Evaluation Methods in Ornamental Plants
Definition of the research and research projects. Development of ornamental plant researches in Turkey, Priorities in researches and priority determination methods. Selection of research subjects and purposes and relating them to the new developments, policies and development plans in Turkey and in the world. Selection of the method and trial pattern. Preparing study plans, budgeting and submitting the projects. Data collection and evaluation methods. Techniques of presenting the results and referencing. Basic principles and approaches of preparing a scientific article.
5. New Developments in Cut Flower Production
Changes in production amounts, patterns and values of cut flower products in Turkey and in the world. New production techniques and comparison of these techniques with the classical methods. Possibility of application of new techniques and of growing new products and cultivars in Turkey. Post harvesting operations and new approaches in marketing organizations.
6. Indoor Planting Design
Definition of the interior space. Functions of plants at interior spaces and integrated approach in indoor planting design. Basic factors affecting the selection of plant species. Plant selection with reference to light, moisture and temperature at interior spaces. Problems of planting indoors and the care of plants.
7. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Applications in Landscape Architecture
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in landscape architecture, preparing report criteria, organization structure, legal conditions. Studying the relationship between activities and ecological factors and other uses. Determination of evaluation techniques.
8. Environment Rights and Policy
Environment-related laws, decrees, regulations, decisions of the Council of Ministers and their application in Turkey. International agreements signed. Environment policies in Turkey and in the world. Activities of environmental organizations.
9. Roof gardens
Historical development, establishment systems, planting techniques, economic and ecological functions of roof gardens. Suitable plants for roof gardens in Turkey.
10. Landscape Design of Tourist Resorts
Definition and classification of tourism. Tourism and environment interactions and relationships. Physical planning in tourism. Classification of tourist facilities. Tourist establishment types and properties according to the tourism legislation in Turkey. Main establishment types and their properties in coastal tourism. Basic design principles. Physical space and environment requirement according to the type of the establishment. Outdoor space organizations in tourism facilities. Landscape design approaches. Landscape design and application.
11. Planning and Design of Sport Facilities
Planning and design of the professional and amateur sports areas; relations with and integration into the environs. Positioning and orientation of sports areas. Design of fields for basketball, volleyball, handball, athleticism and etc. Planning and design of tennis courts. Planning and design of golf areas. Infrastructure works at sports areas. Planting design around sports areas.
12. Theme Parks Design
Theme park types and the reasons of their establishment. Parks aimed at the introduction of plant species; parks for the introduction of main regions or properties of a country; parks for the introduction of the garden and landscape art of a country (garden exhibitions); sculpture parks; water parks; recreation and adventure parks. Design principles of theme parks. Examples from other countries: Keukenhoff, Madurodam etc. Possibilities of establishment of that kind of parks in Turkey.
13. Planning of Botanical Gardens and Zoos
Aims of the establishment and site selection criteria for botanical gardens. Units and facilities that botanical gardens should include and their functional distribution. Examples from other countries. Aims of the establishment of zoos. Criteria to be considered in the design of zoos; environments to be provided for different kind of animals. Examples from other countries. Existing situations of botanic parks and zoos in Turkey. Problems and measures to be taken.
14. Lawn Establishment and Care
Definition of lawn and aesthetic and ecological functions they take on. Classical and modern lawn establishment techniques. Species selection according to the ecological conditions and characteristics of the lawn area to be established. basic features of important grass types with reference to their use and growth. Use of the ornamental grass species in landscaping for different purposes. Basic problems of lawn areas and precautions to be taken against the problems. Sustainability of lawn areas; new developments in the field of care and restoration.
15. Use of Natural Plants in Planting Design
Evaluation of Turkey’s natural vegetation in terms of diversity and usage possibilities in planting design. Basic principles of benefiting from natural plants in planting design and guiding factors. Advantages of natural plant species in terms of ecological adaptation and related problems. Subjects to be considered in selecting natural species. Examples and research and development studies in this field.
16. Advanced Nursery Techniques and Management
Site selection criteria for nursery establishment. Development of nurseries in Turkey and in other countries. New developments in the vegetative and generative production of nursery plants; systems that are used; operations that are done with growing media. Selection of final product purposes; organization of the nursery area and of the tools and systems. Nursery problems in Turkey and marketing possibilities.
17. Highway Landscape Planning
Basic principles of highway planning; route selection; environmental impacts of highway construction and measures to be taken to mitigate these impacts. Highway landscaping and care studies.
18. Planting Techniques in Problematic Areas
Principles and techniques of planting in areas with different characteristics and problems (sloped areas, stone and mine quarries, sand dunes etc.). Case studies.
19. Water-based Recreation Planning
Concept of recreation; relationship between recreation and free time. Importance of water resources for recreation facilities. Recreational planning in the areas such as coasts, lakes, rivers or inland waters which are related to the water and open to the public. Relationship between tourism and recreation. Recreational activities that can be done in water-dependent areas. Relationship between recreational activities and the region and climate. Design principles of water-dependent recreational areas. Public beaches, picnic areas inside or outside the city, camp grounds, riverside recreation areas.
20. Children Playground Design
Children and game. Age classification according to the game elements. Concept of children scale and it's evaluation. Playground accidents. Surface in playgrounds. Playground design and projection. Material, structure and construction. Observation and evaluation of child imagination and creativity. Relationships between playgrounds and the environment. Planting design in playgrounds.
21. Vegetation Analysis in Landscape Planning
The use of ecological information in landscape planning, the role of vegetation analysis methods in landscape planning processes, evaluation of plant cover as an indicator in examining ecological structure and the disturbances in environmental conditions, common use of vegetation analyses' results in biotope mapping and biotope classification with solid examples.
22. Tourism Planning and the Environment
Terms of tourism, tourist,
tourism region, tourism developments both in Turkey and worldwide, economic,
social and environmental consequences of tourism, tourism planning procedure
and caveats, landscape planning techniques and approaches in lessening negative
environmental effects of tourism, importance of collabration between diciplines
and institutions in tourism planning with ecological dimentions.
23. Biotope Mapping
Terms of biotope, biotope classification and biotope mapping, development of biotope mapping applications, biotope mapping studies in Turkey, biotope mapping techniques, examples of biotope mapping studies both in urban and rural areas, role of biotope mapping in landscape planning and natura conservation.
24. Nature Conservation Approaches in European Union
Terms of natura conservation,
improvement of nature conservation in European Countries, legislative regulations
and directives passed for the conservation of nature and natural resources,
CORINE Biotopes, EUNIS Habitats, intorduction of NATURA 2000 the largest nature
conservation network in European Union, Flora-Fauna-Habitat Directive and
its implication.
